Why Furniture Is the Quiet Powerhouse of Modern Workspaces
In workplace design, architecture sets the stage and lighting creates the mood, but furniture is what truly brings a space to life. It’s the element employees interact with every single day, and the part of a project that transforms a floor plate from “a space” into their space.
As Maddie Cox, Head of Furniture at AIS Interiors, puts it, furniture is what “turns a physical environment into something that can be used for productivity, collaboration, and creativity.”
At AIS, our furniture team is involved from concept to installation, working hand in hand with design and project teams to translate a client’s vision into a functional, cohesive environment. That journey was front and centre in our recent work with Revolut – a large-scale, technology-forward project where furniture played a pivotal role in shaping the workspace experience.
More Than Aesthetic
Revolut’s brief called for a modern aesthetic – sleek, contemporary, and future-ready. But style alone wasn’t enough. Every piece needed a purpose. Spaces for deep focus, rooms for private meetings, corners for spontaneous collaboration, lounges for relaxation – all required furniture that supported very different modes of working.
Instead of filling a large floor plate with countless variations, the AIS team refined the selection and used fabrics, finishes, and modular elements to introduce subtle differentiation without compromising unity.
Rethinking Collaboration in the Modern Office
Today, collaboration doesn’t just happen around a ‘collaboration table’ with a whiteboard. It’s fluid, social, and increasingly connected to wellbeing. In Revolut’s space, that meant creating opportunity everywhere, from lounge areas designed for relaxed conversation to terraces, cafés, and social hubs where ideas flow as easily as coffee.
Flexible, inviting furniture encourages employees to choose how they interact, giving them ownership of their environment, which ultimately drives better collaboration and satisfaction.
Modularity for a Fast-Growing Future
With a rapidly scaling organisation, furniture longevity and adaptability were essential. The AIS team specified modular sofas, timeless finishes and scalable solutions, including bespoke meeting pods in multiple sizes, to ensure the space could evolve with the company.
This forward-thinking approach means Revolut’s workspace isn’t just designed for today, it’s built for what’s next.
Some elements quickly became favourites. The barista bar, now the beating heart of the office, is a social anchor where people naturally gather. The auditorium, fitted out entirely by AIS, delivers a powerful “wow moment,” while the custom boardroom table shows how bespoke craftsmanship can elevate a signature space.
These are the kinds of furniture decisions that turn workplaces into experiences.
Great workplace furniture is invisible when it works and unforgettable when it inspires. It shapes how people collaborate, focus, socialise, and feel. And when treated as a strategic design component, not an afterthought, it becomes one of the most powerful tools in workplace transformation.
